Title: Brain-body interactions in cognition: Neural responses to heartbeats shape perceptual awareness and self-consciousness

Abstract : The brain continuously receives afferent signals from internal organs, such as the heart, gut and lung, for monitoring and regulating bodily processes. I will begin by introducing 1) a theoretical framework (Park et al. 2014a) proposing why and how such brain-body interactions could play a role in cognition, and 2) a neural measurement of ‘heartbeat evoked brain potentials’ as a tool for investigating potential roles of brain-body interactions in cognition (Park et al. 2014b; 2016; 2017). Then, I will present two lines of experimental evidence supporting the proposed link between neural processing of interoceptive signals and cognitive functions. 1) Neural responses to heartbeats shape perceptual consciousness. Using magnetoencephalography (MEG) with healthy humans, we found that spontaneous fluctuations in neural responses to heartbeats in the anterior cingulate cortex predicted participants’ conscious perception of visual stimuli at threshold (Park et al. 2014b). 2) Neural processing of interoceptive signals reflects altered states of self-consciousness. We found that transient modulations of neural responses to heartbeats in the posterior cingulate and the insular cortex correlate with experimentally induced changes in self-consciousness using virtual reality technology combined with scalp EEG (Park et al. 2016) and intracranial EEG (Park et al. 2017).  Our findings suggest that neural processing of internal states of the body is a fundamental biological mechanisms for the subjective dimension of conscious experiences including perceptual awareness and self-consciousness.
